Flags have been around for centuries. Authentic flag designs of our ancient ancestors includes a metal flag from Iran, ca, 3,000 BC, and reconstructions of vexilloids (flag-like objects) which were displayed on ancient Egyptian tomb carvings, Greek coins, etc. One example would be a staff held upright with a cloth banner that hangs down vertically on the staff, and on top of the staff is an emblem of sorts.
Flags have come a long way from the ancient vexilloids. At one time, flags were only used to denote countries, royalty, military groups, etc. But in the last century, with no disrespect to the original flags, they have become a bit whimsical. We see flags hanging in support of college and professional football teams. We see flags flying in gardens. We see flags of people’s favorite animals on them. You name it, it can be placed on a flag and hung in reverence, love, rivalry, and whimsy.
I would like to point out that in no way are Love Flags being disrespectful to the history or meaning of our Stars and Stripes. They are more a legacy of your family of today, and for generations to come. Why hide a picture of something or someone that is so precious to you? Fly it with pride.
